15 Unit Apartment Addition

The Lu Don Apartments complex at 9008 NE Hassalo Street will soon add a fourth building containing up to 15 additional homes. Crews will construct the three-story structure atop a basement level with four ground-level units offering fully accessible residences. The 1968-era development currently has three two-story apartment buildings positioned to the north of the property. Architects working on the project placed the new structure along the undeveloped southern edge of the one-acre lot.

The project, designed by Cascade Studio Architecture, features several amenity upgrades to an existing onsite parking lot. A new walkway leading from NE Hassalo Street into the property will give pedestrians a protected path to enter the site. Crews will de-pave several parking spaces near the new building to construct an 800-square-foot outdoor common area with seating. Construction workers will also install a shared 192-square-foot trash enclosure centered on the eastern property line. When completed, residents will share 23 pre-existing onsite parking spaces.

Ground floor-plan posted on development notice at property.

The preliminary plan shows a mix of one and two-bedroom units accessible through three external stairways. This expansion of 14 to 15 homes will nearly double the available residences at this complex, which initially had 18 apartments. A recently filed permit application calls for 15 units, while the posted Development Notice only lists 14. Regardless of the final count, if each above-ground level contains four units, crews will need to construct some living space in the basement level to achieve more than 12 apartments. Work on this project is likely a year away from breaking ground. Expect to see the project updated in 2024.
