Zwickelmania at Montavilla Breweries Feb 17

On February 17th, Zwickelmania® returns to the region with two Montavilla Breweries featuring Zwickel pours from the fermentation tanks and brewery tours. Montavilla Brew Works at 7805 SE Stark Street starts the celebration this Saturday at 11 a.m., followed two hours later by Threshold Brewing & Blending at 403 SE 79th Avenue.

Zwickelmania® is an annual celebration of Oregon craft beer during Oregon Craft Beer Month organized by the Oregon Brewers Guild. Member breweries open their production facility to the public for a behind-the-scenes view of their operation and to offer unique sampling opportunities. The event’s name stems from the word Zwickel, describing the valve or sample port mounted outside a cask or tank. Brewers use those ports to test the product during fermentation, and this annual event allows people 21 years or older to taste beer from a producer’s perspective.

Montavilla Brew Works will offer brewery tours with free Zwickel samples from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guests can meet the brewers and purchase special beer releases throughout the day. The brewery owners will unveil their new cask beer engine and pass out special giveaway items to mark the occasion.

From 1 to 4 p.m., Threshold Brewing & Blending will invite attendees behind their roll-up door into the production area with hourly tours and Zwickel pours. Cousins Maine Lobster food truck will sell its crowd-pleasing food from noon to 8 p.m. on the 17th in partnership with Threshold, allowing people to make a day of Zwickelmania® in Montavilla.

This weekend’s Zwickelmania® is taking place outside of Montavilla as well. More than 50 breweries across Oregon are participating, including beer producers StormBreaker Brewing and Gigantic Brewing Company, which have sales locations in Montavilla. However, the event focuses on beer production at the brewing location. Consequentially, those brands will greet Zwickel-seeking guests at their primary locations. A complete list of participating locations is available online at the official Zwickelmania® site.

For people who miss this beer-rich opportunity on the 17th, Threshold Brewing & Blending will hold its 5th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, February 24th. That event will offer five beer releases served in exclusive and limited glassware. A line-up of DJs will provide entertainment, and wood-fired pizza from guest food truck Hearth and Soul will feed the hungry guests. February is a good month for exploring Montavilla’s brewing community, and walking to the potentially inebriating events is easy.

Ranch Pizza Location on SE Stark

Ranch Pizza will open a new location in Montavilla’s downtown within the former Hungry Hearts storefront at 7940 SE Stark Street. This shop will be the seventh pizzeria for the local chain restaurant since owners Richard Corey and Eric Wood founded it in 2017. The menu honors the square Sicilian-style pizza, and most orders include a side serving of handmade ranch dressing.

The restaurant’s name focuses on a polarizing topping for pizza aficionados. However, Ranch Pizza’s owners feel it enhances the flavors and deserves a spotlight. “The one argument for ranch on pizza, and what I tell most people if they’re confused about it, is that it makes each bite really balanced. Most pizzas have a really tangy red sauce. The tomatoes are really acidic, and it has salt and garlic or whatever. If you add ranch to that, the creamy and tangy, salty flavors are polar opposites, but when you combine them, it’s perfect,” said co-owner Richard Corey to Vice News in 2018. The combination has proven popular for the chain, earning a spot on Willamette Week’s 2018 The Greatest Things We Ate This Year list.

Ranch Pizza Quarter Pie of pepperoni and one vegan slice in the back.

The thick-crust pizza is reminiscent of focaccia bread, and the cheese spreads over the edges, making a toasted crust as it cooks in its pan. The menu offers vegan options, and most pizzas are available by the slice, which is a quarter of the whole pie. The company has stores all over the area, with locations as far out as Beaverton, Oregon City, North Portland, and Happy Valley. This new restaurant will fill an East Portland gap. People interested in sampling the Pizza can visit the inner SE location at 2239 SE 11th Avenue.

Ranch Pizza will join several other pizza locations in the neighborhood, with Flying Pie Pizzeria on the same block and two other pizzerias within walking distance. However, its Sicilian-style pizza and affinity for ranch dressing has successfully carved out a niche for the chain across the region. “We’re happy to join the Montavilla pizza community. We feel we’ll bring a welcome new option and style of pizza to the area, especially with Sebastiano’s relocating to Sellwood in March,” explained Eric Wood.

Ranch Pizza hopes to open the Montavilla Location in March. It will house both the pizzeria and a sister business, Loro Coffee. Loro will serve customers coffee, tea, and pastries in the mornings and early afternoons. The pizza shop will open daily at 11 a.m. and close between 9 and 11 p.m., depending on the day of the week and time of year. In addition to regular menu items, they will offer rotating quarterly special items specific to Montavilla and pastries supplied by Hungry Heart Bakery.

Update 2:45 p.m. December 30th, 2023: This article was updated with additional information regarding the timeline and format of the new restaurant.

Vino Veritas Finds New Owners

Vino Veritas changed ownership this week, moving from one group of dedicated wine specialists to an equally knowledgeable and passionate partnership of family and friends. The three new owners intend to build on the successes of this renowned Portland wine bar and bottle shop at 7835 SE Stark Street with subtle enhancements and expanded offerings.

Vino Veritas opened in April 2017 to a receptive customer base, winning the Willamette Week Reader’s Choice award for Best Portland Wine Bar in 2018. The shop continued to win accolades through 2022, becoming a fixture for wine enthusiasts in the region. Dana Cofer left the group of original owners in 2020. The remaining partners, Sami Khawaja, Trevor Gorham, Manuel Mederle, and Neil Mattson, continued building Vino Veritas through the pandemic, maintaining high standards in a challenging environment. After six and a half years embedded in the community, the ownership group had to make the difficult decision to find new leadership for the bar. Manuel Mederle has decided to return to his roots in northern Italy to be among family and friends. Trevor Gorham also feels it is time to move on from Vino Veritas with the perspective that it is “good for a business to have a fresh pair of eyes and new ideas.” On September 22nd, the owners finalized the sale and began gracefully bringing the new owners into the business.

Nick Ferreira (left) Andrew King (right)

Friends Andrew King, Nick Ferreira, and Cristiano Ferreira knew they wanted to start a wine bar together. Instead of opening one from scratch, they searched for an existing business with an established reputation they could use as a foundation for their aspirations. After reviewing several options, they were ecstatic to find Vino Veritas. Nick Ferreira has worked as a sommelier for the last decade and knows the bar well. Unlike other options, this space was close to what they wanted to build.

The new owners are looking to expand on Vino Veritas’ existing brand while maintaining what people already love. “I think they’ve laid a lot of the groundwork for things that we would want to do with a wine shop. For us, it’s really just expanding a little bit on the legacy. We’ve talked about expanding the by-the-glass selection and bringing in more food options,” explained King. Nick Ferreira has worked in places that offer 600 by-the-glass options and found that to be an invaluable tool in exploring a customer’s tastes. Although Vino Veritas will not have that level of selection, they do hope to offer customers an experience that covers wine’s flavorful variations across the world. Expanding the food menu will take more time and some kitchen upgrades. They will develop that part of the business after they have time to settle into operations and see what type of food service is possible.

Wine education is a large component of what they want to offer patrons at Vino Veritas. Nick Ferreira is working towards becoming a Master Sommelier. When he passes his fourth and final test, Ferreira will join a group of 273 professionals worldwide and become Portland’s only title holder. Currently, he is one of four advanced sommeliers in the area. Andrew King met Ferreira through work and became good friends. Kings’ relationship with wine came later in life compared to Ferreira. “It started out as a hobby that I discovered during the pandemic and just quickly grew into a full-on second career for me,” said King.

All the new owners intend to work at Vino Veritas. Nick Ferreira will be in the shop the most, acting as the buyer, bartender, and wine expert. King will split his time between this new venture and his existing job. Nick Ferreira’s brother, Cristiano, is the third owner. He works full-time at Meta, keeping him out of the bar during the week. However, the friends expect to be at the shop constantly. “We picked a spot like this because it’s where we want to spend all our time. That was a big thing for us, making sure that we continue the owner-operator model. My favorite businesses to go to are the ones where the people building the business are actually inside the business,” said King. This type of work is a calling for Nick Ferreira, and he knows he will become a fixture in the place. “I love selling wine; it’s my favorite thing,” said Ferreira. “I could pass it off eventually when we find somebody to help out, but I don’t see a situation where we’re not going to be behind the bar.”

As passionate as they are about wine, they know it is vital to remain a place where people can casually drink and listen to music after a long day. “We also want to be a great place to take a date,” remarked Ferreira. People interested in meeting the new owners can visit any day between 4 and 10 p.m. Jazz fans will continue to enjoy music programming supervised by Montavilla Jazz Executive Director Neil Mattson. The departing owners are proud to have created a meaningful space for a community that has supported them for many years. They look forward to seeing how Vino Veritas will continue that legacy under new stewardship.

Montavilla Brew Works’ Deadtoberfest

This Saturday, September 23rd, Montavilla Brew Works (MBW) will hold its first annual Deadtoberfest. This Grateful Dead infused Oktoberfest celebration will feature German-style Bratwurst and several beers from the brewery’s collection. Founder and head brewer Michael Kora, inspired by MBW’s successful Street Fair beer garden, decided to create this new fall beer and food festival.

Kora has wanted MBW to host an Oktoberfest event for several years. The enthusiastic showing from last July’s Montavilla Street Fair showed that people are ready to come out and enjoy gatherings again. The Grateful Dead tribute group The Weir Dose will provide music from 6 to 9 p.m. for an all-ages performance. From 3 to 9 p.m., MBW will pour selections of their beers brewed in-house, including the Körabräu Helles-style German Lager, Plywood Pilsner, and FH IPAs. Along with the beverages, people can purchase German-style Bratwurst from Zenner’s Sausage Co. throughout the event.

This Saturday’s festivities will occur in the covered outdoor patio area connected to the taproom. Kora has wanted to offer more community gathering opportunities since opening MBW in July 2015. Building the brand and moving past the pandemic hampered those desires, but MBW has now moved past those barriers. 2023 seems to be the year of new traditions for the microbrewer at 7805 SE Stark Street, and they hope people will stop by for a listen, a drink, or a bite on the 23rd.

Portland Beer Week starts June 16th

This Friday, Portland Beer Week 2023 starts with several events in Montavilla and across the Portland Metro region. The ten-day-long celebration of beer runs from June 16th through the 25th, offering unique tastings, creative food pairings, and some of the best brews from around the world and around Portland. Area residents do not have to travel far to participate, with three of the nearly 50 events in the neighborhood.

Industry leaders and enthusiasts founded the Portland Beer Week organization in 2011 as a decentralized effort to expand beer education and promote Portland’s brew culture. The group uses sponsorship funds to promote the participating businesses and organize large events like the Brewers Burger Brawl taking place at SE 79th Avenue Montavilla Street Plaza on June 23rd. That is just one of three neighborhood events during this year’s Beer Week.

Sebastiano’s at 411 SE 81st Avenue will offer Italian-style Pilsners from Italy and Portland during their Forza Azzuri! Italian Pilsners from on and off The Boot event. This opening day gathering starts at 5 p.m. on June 16th with a ticket price of $25. Located on Sebastiano’s back patio, this event is co-hosted by Von Ebert’s Sam Pecoraro and Daniel Wavrin of Ferndale Farmstead Cheeses. Ticket price includes five 5oz tastings of Italian Pilsner from Italy and the Pac NW alongside an artisan cheese plate of Ferndale Farmstead cheese.

Neighborhood newcomer StormBreaker Brewing will host a meet-and-greet at their newly acquired tap truck on June 22nd inside The Yard at Montavilla food cart pod at 8220 Northeast Davis Street. Brewery owners, brewers, and the StormBreaker hospitality team will be on-hand to share some beers and delicious food while answering questions.

Then on Friday, June 23rd, Portland Beer Week and Threshold Brewing and Blending present this year’s Brewers Burger Brawl. This marquee event pits five local breweries against one another to present the “best” burger and beer pairing. Threshold was last year’s Judge’s Winner and will compete this year against Grand Fir Brewing, StormBreaker Brewing, Vice Beer, and Great Notion Brewing. Fifty $35 advance tickets are available for those who want a discount and a guaranteed serving of all five pairings. Otherwise, people can show up between 5 and 8 p.m. at 403 SE 79th Avenue, paying $6 per burger or $8 for a burger and 5oz beer pairing.

This year’s Portland Beer Week is on track to becoming the busiest since 2019 and marks another return to successful community events post-pandemic. Montavilla residents are fortunate to have a handful of local events within walking distance this year, and any alcohol-themed event is best enjoyed without needing to drive afterward. However, although beer drinking is encouraged, this is an opportunity to eat a wide range of brew-adjacent foods, and people are also welcome to visit other non-participating beer businesses. The neighborhood has many to choose from.

Dzô Opens on NE Glisan

This month, Dzô Bar and Grill opened at 7907 NE Glisan Street, offering a lineup of Asian-inspired cocktails and Vietnamese food. This Vietnamese American sports bar blends classic pub menu items with dishes like Phở and fried rice. The full bar offers a wide range of cocktails, imported beers, and microbrews. Patrons can watch a variety of games playing on four large-screen televisions while enjoying their drink or meal.

Owner, Sam Nguyen, explained that the bar’s name originates from a customary expression of celebration. “Dzô is pronounced yo in Vietnamese, and it just means cheers. It’s a tradition in Vietnam where they count 1-2-3-Dzô” before drinking. It represents the communal and friendly environment that Nguyen wants to cultivate inside her establishment.

Nguyen and her husband, Hao Le, started this bar as an enjoyable way to shift away from their demanding careers. Nguyen is a working physician assistant (PA), and the recent trend in her workplace has made it less fulfilling. “I just feel burnt out from my job, especially during COVID,” said Nguyen. Packed hospitals and heightened patient demands caused her to reconsider how she wanted to spend her workdays. Sam Nguyen found this space thanks to her sister, who owns the Thanh Billiards club next door. The building’s owner completely renovated the storefronts in 2020, leaving all but the billiards location vacant. This location, with built-in customers from the neighboring business, was just the opportunity Nguyen and Le were looking for.

The bar’s owners did not anticipate how long the City’s permitting process would take when starting the build-out process nearly two years ago. Fortunately, the landlord helped with the rent while they waited for permit approvals. The extended spin-up time allowed the owners to gradually create a well-finished interior. The newly built-out space features a modern rustic design with wainscoting wrapping the dinning-room and white subway tile framing the full kitchen. Colorful LED light strips highlight details throughout the bar, and directional overhead lighting creates a visual definition around each table.

Nguyen and Le are adjusting the drink and food menus over the next few months based on customer demand and feedback. However, some items are already a hit. Nguyen is particularly proud of their Lychee Lime Fizz cocktail and Phở. The owners have two staff helping them run the location, and they are open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day except Wednesdays. Stop by with some friends and toast with a “cheers” or “Dzô” as you see fit.

Thai Me Drunken Noodle at Growler’s Taproom

After an unexpected delay, Thai Me Drunken Noodle will officially open at 803 SE 82nd Avenue this Wednesday, July 13th. Cart operator Tyler Pathammavong has quietly served guests from this location over the last few days. Now, he is ready to welcome the full volume of customers looking for his Northern Thai-style fried chicken and noodle dishes. The food cart follows Growler’s Taproom operating hours of 4 p.m. to 12 a.m., Wednesday through Friday, and 2 p.m. to 12 a.m. on Weekends.

Article first published May 18th, 2022.

Later this month, Thai Me Drunken Noodle will open a food cart connected to Growler’s Taproom at 803 SE 82nd Avenue. The new eatery fills the space left vacant by Erica’s Soul Food, which relocated to 120 NE Russell Street earlier this year. Unlike previous carts working from this location, the food and beer businesses will partner to offer a unified dining destination and operate as a single location.

Tyler Pathammavong has operated the original Thai Me Drunken Noodle cart at 2810 NE Glisan Street for the past six months. That location started after Pathammavong sold his other businesses to new owners and focused on a Northern Thai-style fried chicken and noodle-centric menu. He has seventeen years of experience cooking Thai and Laotian dishes, a passion that began after his younger brother immigrated from Laos and started working in the industry. A natural hard worker, Pathammavong’s food service career paralleled his 25 years at the United States Postal Service (USPS). Now retired from the USPS, Tyler Pathammavong and his wife Leng are refocusing all efforts on their food creations.

Thai Me Drunken Noodle at NE 28th Ave and Glisan Street

The Thai Me Drunken Noodle menu takes inspiration from the owner’s appetites and the foods his mother taught him to prepare. “I just cook whatever I [would] wanna eat at home,” explained Tyler Pathammavong. The cart’s specialty is a Laotian-style fried chicken served over sticky rice with a sauce made from a family recipe. Embracing the shared culinary history of Laos and Northern Thailand, Pathammavong transforms the traditional recipes with a personal adaptation that creates a one-of-a-kind menu. Outside of the chicken, most dishes forgo the traditional white rice and instead feature noodles. “My [dishes] might not be exactly like most Thai food, ’cause I use everything noodle, even in my Curry.” Said Pathammavong.

Although the Northeast Portland cart will remain open for a while, the partnership with Growler’s Taproom is the long-term focus for the cart operator. The taproom’s owner, Joe Rodgers, explained that the new cart is an extension of his business. “It’s more of a brick and mortar kind of feel, but we are adjusting it where the kitchen is in the cart.” The food and bar service will maintain the same hours and offer a combined food and beer menu. Currently, Growler’s is open Wednesday through Sunday from 4 p.m. to Midnight. Rodgers plans to expand the hours to feature an earlier 2 p.m. start and a seven-day-a-week schedule when the food service begins.

Joe Rodgers and Tyler Pathammavong are actively working on an updated menu to pair with the beer selections. The partners are also working to integrate food service into Growler’s popular Star Trek trivia, live music, movies, and comedy nights. Look for schedules and updates at the Growler’s Taproom website. For those who want to preview some of the creations coming later this May, consider stopping by the Thai Me Drunken Noodle cart at 2810 NE Glisan Street.
